Lappin Park | Salem, MA

Landworks Studio, in collaboration with the City of Salem’s Department of Planning & Community Development, is advancing the redesign of Lappin Park, a key downtown open space. Supported by funding and positive feedback from the City’s Design Review Board and Redevelopment Authority, the project reflects community input gathered through in-park conversations and online surveys.

The design proposes a range of updates to improve accessibility, circulation, and comfort, including:

· ADA-compliant pathways to adjacent storefronts
· Refined site circulation and threshold enhancements
·
New seating and integrated amenities
·
Updated planting design featuring native, seasonal species for year-round interest

A key material strategy involves the use of reclaimed local granite, explored through three paving concepts that blend concrete, granite inlays, and cobblestone patterns—emphasizing the park’s role as both a gateway and gathering space.

In close collaboration with civil engineers, the design team developed an efficient and integrated stormwater management system. The solution directs surface runoff into planted areas and subsurface drains, all while maintaining a clean, unobtrusive appearance—no visible drainage infrastructure interrupts the experience of the space.

Conceptual lighting strategies and opportunities for public art installations support a flexible, welcoming, and community-oriented identity for the park.

The team looks forward to continuing its partnership with local stakeholders as the project advances, shaping a resilient and inclusive civic space in the heart of Salem.
