In 2007, the City of Salem received a U.S. EPA Brownfield Cleanup Grant and a state Urban Self-Help Grant to design and construct a 0.38 acre park along the newly designed South River Harbor Walk Project, bordering on Salem’s Point neighborhood. Through a virtual archeological lens, our proposal distinguishes traces of the site’s past industrial layers as a means for prescribing a dynamic and relevant park for the city’s future. In so doing, the history of the site is presented, a brownfield is remediated and the future of the site is given shape in the body of a new urban park, a destination for all residents of Salem.
