Intense workshops and public hearings defined the tenor of the Peer Review process in which Landworks Studio, as team lead, and Office dA, as Urban Designers, critically evaluated a developer’s proposal to extensively remake a critical block of urban fabric in the Historic Business District of Salem, Massachusetts. Our study included a detailed analysis of the impact of increased density on existing city fabric including the study and presentation to the city of several alternative massing and open space studies as a means of assisting officials in evaluating the proposal on the table. The study of ground floor usages throughout the downtown district and pedestrian circulation analysis also assisted the city in evaluating the proposal.
