A hybrid landscape highlighting the interface between historic urban fabric and a dynamic and volatile river edge becomes the mechanism for re-establishing vibrancy of this culturally important urban center. Memphis Marquee, a strategy of formal and programmatic convergencies, twistings and overlaps had two main objectives: to reconnect the Waterfront District with historic Beale Street and to rejuvenate both areas by creating a memorable hybrid landscape experience. A calibrated mixture of various programs and landscape typologies interweaves and overlaps, creating a vibrant, new rhythm of plastic and variable open spaces. The extension of the marquis architecture of Beale Street westward to the Mississippi engages the Riverboat culture and cobble-stone architecture of the water's edge.
