Barnstable Gateway | Hyannis, MA

This ecologically responsive plan for an expanded section of Route 132, designed to meet State Highway Department guidelines, seeks to create an artful, compelling and dynamic entrance corridor along a two mile section of highway between Route 6 and downtown Hyannis, MA, on Cape Cod. The interpretive take on the ecology of the Sandplain Grasslands typology seeks to address overarching ecological considerations expressed by the community and promises for all users a fresh ‘Cape Cod Gateway’ experience by car, on bicycle and on foot. This globally rare ecotype occupies the clearings created by the expansion achieving an identifiable and unique hybrid landscape experience. Choreographed interplay between the transportation routes and ecotypes and vegetative ‘slashings’ will create rhythmically cohesive experiences for various speeds of movements and define the essence of the corridor.
